Friends of the Selby Public Library has joined forces with the Sarasota County Library System to pay tribute to Sarasota's famed author John D. MacDonald, in commemoration of his 100th birthday. It will begin with the One Book One Community announcing that the 2016 One Book selection is the entire work of this master storyteller.
The kickoff for this tribute will be on Friday, January 22, at 6:00 pm inside the Selby Library Auditorium with award-winning authors John Jakes, Don Bruns and James R. Hall who will honor John D. MacDonald. With these local authors, and power point presentations with JDM Archivist Calvin Branche, learn about the fictional lives and characters MacDonald so deftly created in his works. This program, open to the public, will have other surprises to keep you intrigued.
Friday, January 26, at 2:30 pm, Author Tim Dorsey will be the seventh recipient of the John D. MacDonald writing award at this free open-to-the-public program at Selby Library's Geldbart Auditorium. The presenter will be Calvin Branche, President of Green Flash Salvage, a Florida non-profit with the aim to further Florida fiction, especially in the mystery/crime/detective genre. Following the presentation, Happy Hour with complimentary bites will be held at 4:00 pm at Libby's Cafe & Bar, 1917 Osprey Avenue, Sarasota.
Dorsey, born in Indiana, moved to Florida at the age of 1. With a background as a police and courts reporter, he joined The Tampa Tribune as a general assignment reporter and worked as the Tribune's night metro editor. He left the paper in August 1999 to write full time. Dorsey has since published eighteen novels in several languages: Florida Roadkill, Hammerhead Ranch Motel, Orange Crush, Triggerfish Twist, The Stingray Shuffle, Cadillac Beach, Torpedo Juice, The Big Bamboo, Hurricane Punch, Atomic Lobster, Nuclear Jellyfish, Gator A-Go-Go, Electric Barracuda, When Elves Attack, Pineapple Grenade, The Riptide Ultra-Glide, Tiger Shrimp Tango and Shark Skin Suite. Dorsey constantly travels throughout Florida visiting historical sites. His works are filled with descriptions of these sites which are often related to the plot.
Throughout the seven month period leading up to the dedication of MacDonald's memorial plaque on July 23, 2016, Sarasota County and its nine libraries will host numerous free events throughout the community.
Please join One Book and the Friends of Selby Library Tribute Committee for this celebration of all things John D. MacDonald!
